Seatopia's Testing Commitment

We believe that seafood is the original super nutrient.

Seatopia lab tests our seafood to ensure that it is mercury safe and contains zero detectable microplastics. We are the only seafood company in the world that tests for both mercury and microplastics and value our testing commitment to you.

We do not serve Bluefin tuna, as this species is too high in mercury for us to source safely for pregnant women and children. In the carefully curated seafood we serve, we conduct a fluorescence microscopic test with Nile red stain and a total particle count of mercury and microplastics. We ensure less than 0.1 parts per million (PPM) of mercury in our seafood.

Our testing commitment to you.

We lab test all our seafood products (a product is any piece of seafood that you purchase from Seatopia to enjoy at home) for mercury and microplastics. A sample from every product is tested for mercury, ensuring it contains less than 0.1 PPM. We also conduct annual microplastics testing on core products to confirm that there are zero detectable microplastics.

Commonly accepted low-mercury designatio is 0.1 parts per million (ppm) or lower. Fish and seafood labeled as low in mercury typically fall at or below this threshold.

Zero detectable microplastics means that no microplastic particles were found at or above the method's Limit of Detection (LOD), Seatopia’s current quantitation limit of 0.009 particles per gram. Currently, there are no universally regulated Limitation of Quantification (LOQ) or acceptable daily intake thresholds for microplastics in human food due to the emerging nature of microplastic research and the variability in testing methods. In the absence of established global standards, research and regulatory bodies often seek an LOQ that can reliably detect microplastic contamination at concentrations around or below 1 particle per gram, especially in seafood, where microplastics are more commonly assessed. Thus, 0.009 particles per gram is considerably more sensitive than typical investigative levels.

Testing results are available here, on our product pages, species pages, and is made available to our artisan aquaculture farm partners.

Data from Seatopia Mercury Test Results and FDA Mercury Levels in Commercial Fish and Shellfish (1990-2012)

Frequently Asked Questions:

Does "mercury safe" mean completely free of mercury?

No it does not. According to the FDA fish considered “mercury safe,” must have a mercury concentration of no more than 0.15 µg/g (ppm) if consumed three times per week, fitting into the “Best Choices” category for frequency recommendations. Seatopia's lab testing ensures that our seafood contains <.1PPM.

Does "zero detectable microplastics" mean completely free of microplastics?

No it does not. Seatopia’s current quantitation limit of 0.009 particles per gram means that there are no microplastics detected above that range. This sensitivity surpasses many standard detection thresholds. Seatopia's detects microplastics at low levels. Fish and shellfish have been measured in the ranges of .1 to 10 particles per gram of tissue. Yuck!
