These giant restorative mangrove aquaculture farmed XXXL Black Tiger Shrimp make for a delicious center of the plate guaranteed crowd pleaser. Named for its distinctive striped appearance when cooked, our BAP Certified Black Tiger Shrimp, are sourced from a collective of family-run farms in the sustainably managed mangrove forests of southern Vietnam. No chemicals or antibiotics are ever used, and the shrimp feed naturally from their surrounding habitat, just as wild shrimp do. These slower-growing black tiger shrimp taste sweeter and have a snappier bite than any other shrimp.
Zero Input Aquaculture: This model of extensive farmed (the opposite of intensive farming) mangrove aquaculture involves the cultivation of the shrimp in ponds of roughly 3-8 hectares which are partially covered in mangroves and are naturally topped-up every two weeks after the harvesting process. The mangrove ponds are stocked with tiger prawn post-larvae (baby stage) sourced from a local hatchery. Stocked at low densities, the young prawns grow to market size without the need for feeding, as the mangroves themselves help to provide natural food, including algae and invertebrates. Every two weeks (at the time of the full and new moons) much of the water is released at low tide, allowing a proportion of the shrimp to be harvested. The first harvest takes place 3 lunar months after the post-larval stage babies are stocked into the pond.
With no feed inputs or related costs, small-scale farmers don’t need to extend themselves to obtain loans to purchase feed, which can represent between 50 and 70 percent of an aquaculture operation’s overall costs.
This unique shrimp aquaculture cooperative provides Vietnamese farmers with an improved livelihood, while also restoring mangrove ecosystems in Southern Vietnam's Ca Mau Province. With this innovative approach, both shrimp farming and mangrove restoration can happen together, providing valuable services to the environment and their community. Purchasing this product helps maintain healthy ecosystems by supporting artisan regenerative aquaculture-based food production, and delivers the highest quality seafood for your enjoyment.

We Plant Kelp With Every Order
We believe that a healthier ocean for future generations only happens if we do our part. Restoring kelp forests plays a vital role in healing our blue planet by supporting habitat restoration, sequestering carbon, producing oxygen, cycling nutrients, and reducing the effects of ocean acidification.
We want to thank our community for supporting kelp reforestation. Together we are helping to heal our oceans—one kelp tree at a time.
