What Every Expecting Parent Should Know

When my wife was pregnant with our daughter, I found myself in a paradox—knowing that clean, nutrient-dense seafood is one of the most powerful superfoods during pregnancy… but also knowing how dangerous the wrong fish can be.

From mercury and parasites to microplastics and temperature mishandling, there’s a long list of reasons sushi is often off the table for pregnant women. But there’s another way.

That’s why we built Seatopia: to offer sushi-grade seafood that’s lab-tested, mercury-safe, parasite-free, and traceable to regenerative farms. Because no one should have to choose between nutrient density and peace of mind.

Why Seafood Should Be on the Pregnancy Menu

Seafood is packed with DHA, EPA, iodine, selenium, vitamin D, and high-quality protein — nutrients essential for fetal development. But only if it's clean.

Nutrient

Why It Matters in Pregnancy

DHA & EPA

Brain + eye development, lower risk of preterm birth

Selenium

Natural mercury binder, antioxidant

Iodine

Thyroid support, brain myelination

Vitamin D

Bone formation, immune health

Protein

Builds fetal tissue, supports maternal repair

“Omega-3s are non-negotiable for brain and nervous-system development—but they must come without a side of toxins.”
James Arthur Smith, Founder

Meet Vanessa: Mama-to-Be & Nutrition Response Testing Specialist

One of our most trusted ambassadors, Vanessa Fitzgerald (@veeshoney), is a certified Nutrition Response Testing (NRT) practitioner who has spent years guiding clients toward cleaner, more functional ways of eating.

Now, as she prepares to welcome her first child, she’s turning her focus inward — and trusting Seatopia to nourish her body and baby through pregnancy.

“When I was pregnant, I craved sushi but refused to gamble on my baby’s health. With Seatopia, I indulged—minus the anxiety.”
Vanessa Fitzgerald, Co-Founder of Paya Health

Vanessa’s endorsement is rooted in science, but also in personal experience. With a deep understanding of the risks associated with conventional seafood, she sees Seatopia as more than a brand — it’s peace of mind on a plate.

What Makes Seatopia Safe for Pregnancy?

We call it the Seatopia Standard, and it’s designed to exceed FDA guidelines and traditional “sushi-grade” claims at every step:

✅ Mercury-Safe

Every batch is lab-tested to ensure mercury < 0.10 ppm — most test far lower. We also publish selenium-to-mercury ratios (average 6.8:1), which offer added protection against mercury toxicity.

✅ Parasite-Free

Unlike most raw fish, we superfreeze to –76°F for over 24 hours, killing parasites without damaging texture.

✅ Microplastic-Free

We test quarterly using FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy, and every sample from 2024–2025 has come back “none detected.”

✅ Cold Chain Verified

From the moment it’s harvested to the moment it reaches your door, every degree is logged and monitored. Each box comes with a QR code to view your lot’s COA (certificate of analysis).

✅ Regenerative + Traceable

All of our fish come from vetted, small-scale farms that use clean feed and prioritize the health of their watersheds and ecosystems.

Tips for Expecting Sushi Lovers

  • Verify the source. Ask for mercury/selenium test data (we publish ours).

  • Avoid big predators. Say no to swordfish, bigeye tuna, and king mackerel.

  • Thaw properly. Use a fridge, not the counter. Consume within 48 hours.

  • Keep it cold. Stick to ≤38°F, and clean your prep space thoroughly.

  • Cook when in doubt. Even a light sear makes a big difference in safety.

The Seatopia Promise

For Mothers, From Mothers

We’ve built our sourcing, freezing, and testing protocols so expecting families can eat without second-guessing. Whether you’re a first-time mom like Vanessa or just passionate about your health, we’re here to support you with seafood that’s clean, certified, and truly trustworthy.

Because growing a human shouldn’t mean giving up the ritual or the benefits of pristine seafood.
