Eco-Friendly Packaging
"Sustainable Seafood" packaged in plastic and styrofoam is not sustainable...
Seatopia’s mission from the beginning has been to reduce waste and package seafood with zero conventional petroleum plastic. We are doing the best we can to be as sustainable as possible given the options available to us. The sustainable Vericooler insulation that we originally used has gone out of business, and we now offer a great alternative called Green Cell Foam. In addition to updating the insulation, the composable bags used to package the seafood are now being discontinued and we are updating to the next best sustainable option. As we undergo this change, you may receive shipments with a combination of the two types of bags. We continue to seek out the most sustainable packaging available on the market and will update our packaging as these materials become available.
Cardboard Shipping Box: 100% post consumer waste. Soy-based non toxic inc. Please recycle. Justman Packaging provides great options in Los Angeles.
Insulation: Thin plastic film and biodegradable US grown corn starch-based foam. Instructions: Cut open the film and pull out the foam panels. Recycle the film. Once the foam and film are separated, you’re able to dispose of Green Cell Foam as you choose! The foam is compostable in any residential or commercial compost facility. The bio-based packaging foam will decompose in 60 days or less when in a moist soil environment. The foam also dissolves in water— it even decomposes in seawater and freshwater! The foam burns cleanly and safely in fireplaces, firepits and power plants. Currently we use GreenCellFoam which is now owned by TemperPack which also make a great product called ClimaCell. We are also in conversation with CruzFoam which is working on scaling availability of insulation made from shrimp shells. Another interesting start up using feathers is pluumo.

Freezer Safe Vaccum-Seal Seafood Bags- VARIABLE Please check each bag individually: Compostable bags are labeled COMPOSTABLE. Please place those bags in a compost. Grounded Packaging makes good one but they are not ideal for all applications...
Due to supply chain issues, we also now use a biobased (sugarcane) plastic bag. They will be labeled as BioVac or PlantBased Recyclable. These do NOT say compostable on the packaging and are suitable for recycling in either #2, #4, or soft plastic streams, these are not compostable.
Alternatively some of the bags we use are simply: Recyclable. These bag will need to be cleaned of any residual oil or fish and placed in either #2, #4, or soft plastic streams. They are readily recyclable, as long as the material is clean and dry.
Compostable Earthboard backers- These seafood backers are recyclable, compostable and plastic-free.
Biodegradable Cold Packs- Sealed biodegradable plastic pouch with gel refrigerant made with non-toxic ingredients listed as FDA GRAS. In a landfill setting, the biodegradable pack will start to break down in 18 months. Dispose in the trash.
