Faroe Islands Salmon

Born of the North Atlantic, Bakkafrost salmon breed is fed a wholesome diet carefully harvested from their natural environment surrounding the Faroe Islands. These small strips of land marked by sharp, steep cliffs, are nestled in the middle of the North Atlantic, and boast a cold, clean tide that keeps the surrounding waters pristine.

Certified Clean Fish Oil

Bakkafrost salmon is fed fishmeal produced from fish oil which is cleaned for environmental pollutants like Dioxins and dl-PCBs.

Dioxins and dl-PCBs can be detected in many foods. Limits for the levels of these environmental pollutants are strictly regulated. Routine tests made by the Faroese Food and Veterinary Authority show that the levels of these environmental pollutants in Faroe Islands Salmon are far below all assigned limits. However, by cleaning the fish oil in the feed, Bakkafrost believes that it will differentiate Bakkafrost Salmon and strengthen its position as one of the healthiest farmed salmon in the marketplace.

Healthy Omega 3 to Omega 6 Ratio

Feed is one of the most important aspects when producing top quality salmon. Uniquely, Bakkafrost produces its own fishmeal and fish oil, which is processed into high-quality fish feed at the same facility.

This impressive vertical integration allows Bakkafrost full control of the content in our fish feed and helps maintain a much higher level of fishmeal and fish oil compared to most other salmon producers, giving Bakkafrost Salmon a better fat content that is especially rich in the healthy Omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA) and has a healthy Omega-3 to 6 ratio of 1.4:1. This natural diet is evident in the impeccable taste of Bakkafrost Salmon.

The natural diet for wild salmon is, of course, rich in marine matter. By keeping thier farmed salmon´s diet as natural as possible, they produce some of the industry´s best Feed Conversion Ratios – a key indicator of sustainability.

All fish used to produce Bakkafrost´s fishmeal and fish oil are from approved sustainable fisheries – a large portion being fish and off-cuts or fish that don’t go directly to human consumption. The result is a higher quality salmon produced sustainably with impressive food in food out result.

Global Salmon Initiative

Bakkafrost is a proud founding member of the Global Salmon Initiative (GSI), an international leadership initiative established to significantly improve the sustainability and transparency of salmon farming.

The initiative brings together global farmed salmon producers and other industry stakeholders (such as the WWF, ASC and the industry feed companies) to significantly improve the sustainability of the sector; improving human health, environmental responsibility and efficient feed conversion rate; achieving the highest standards of members’ corporate citizenship; and in turn enhancing social license to operate and market acceptance.

Together with the industry, the GSI is focused on advancing three specific objectives:

1.Biosecurity: through sharing of best practices and knowledge, GSI hopes to have a substantial impact on decreasing levels of sea lice, reducing the use of antibiotics, and improving fish health.

2.Sustainable feed: in partnership with the industry feed companies – Biomar, Cargill, Skretting and Salmofoods, the GSI is continually evaluating the sustainability of feed raw materials and looking for new innovative approaches to improve the industry’s FCR and health profile.

3.Industry standards: by supporting members to reach the Aquaculture Stewardship Certification (ASC) standard, the initiative is advancing sustainability standards across the salmon industry.

Using the ASC standard as a framework, the GSI has increased transparency through annual reporting on key sustainability indicators including feed and raw materials, fish escapes, and social impacts.

“As one of the original GSI members, Bakkafrost continues to play a global leadership role in the initiative. Their high level of engagement and willingness to share updates and insights when it comes to improvements in sustainability and biosecurity has been important in speeding the rate of progress, and to driving improvement across the whole sector.”
